Allie Mercedes - Birth doula and founder of terra mama
Allie has been active in the world of maternal health and global women’s empowerment for several years. A lifelong learner and traveller, she has supported women all over the world: from living and working with artisan women in the Masai Mara in Kenya as well as hospitals and birthing centres in Karatu and Mto Wa Mbo, Tanzania. Allie has always had an organic, passion for providing emotional support, empowering women, and accessible maternal care. Her curiosity for other cultures and how they birth is the foundation of Terra Mama.
In her doula tool kit, Allie completed DONA International training as well as childbirth education classes and breastfeeding support. As your doula, Allie takes an empowering and holistic approach to pregnancy, allowing you to take control of your own birth experience and supporting you in whichever way you choose to bring your baby earthside. She believes that no one should be denied the right to make their own decisions regarding their birth experience, and she will be there to support you no matter what.
When she isn’t a doula, you can probably find Allie hiking mountains, planning events, or baking yummy plant-based foods.
Laurel Schell - birth and postpartum doula
Laurel's journey as a doula began ten years ago, when she started working with new mothers as a childcare provider. She was most passionate about providing moms with the peace that comes from knowing their children are safe and loved. Now, she has shifted her focus from infant care to maternal support, so that she can bring her passion to a role that puts mothers at the front and centre. Her philosophy as a doula is grounded in the principle of absolute reproductive freedom and unconditional support. She provides a calm, strong, and informed presence during pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period. Laurel delivers kind and compassionate maternal care so that your physical, mental, and emotional needs are met. She believes every woman deserves the perinatal support of a doula, and hopes to help make that a reality. Laurel trained as a birth and postpartum doula with DONA International, and is working towards her DONA certification. She has also completed specialized training in working with survivors of sexual violence during labour. She brings her knowledge of supporting survivors to every woman and every birth, so that all women can benefit from an approach focused on comfort and consent. Laurel is also an actor and creator who has performed her work in theatres across the country, and is currently doing the hilarious and fulfilling work of training as a clown!
